Psoriasis treatment by phototherapy

Phototherapy treatment

Phototherapy is a recommended treatment for skin diseases which consists on the ministration of ultraviolet radiation (UVA, UVB or UVA + B) alone, or in combination with photoactive drugs (psoralens) which increase its potency.

The UV light therapy is one of the most effective methods for treatment of plaque psoriasis and numerous inflammatory dermatosis. It is also advisable to treat facial and trunk vitiligo, and in serious cases of atopic dermatitis.

On the other hand, for its local immunosuppressive capacity and almost non-existent side effects, it is also applied on other dermatosis.

UVB therapy is based on the beneficial effects that sunlight has in some skin diseases. With the therapy with psoralen and UVA radiation, skin gets exposed to the ultraviolet radiation A after taking a photosensitizing drug (psoralen) which increases the therapeutic effects of this radiation source.

Phototherapy is an alternative treatment which avoids the use of biologic drugs. Your dermatologist will make you a customized treatment, adjusting the dose and number of sessions to your skin phototype and your condition’s development.
